Das fünfte Kind einer ärmlichen Pastorenfamilie wurde 1822 in Neubukow (Mecklenburg) geboren und wuchs im nahegelegenen Ankershagen auf. Eines seiner frühen Leseerlebnisse - ein Buch aus dem wohlgehüteten Bücherregal seines Vaters - ließ ihn von nun an nicht mehr los: Homers Geschichten über den Kampf um Troja.<br/>Einer, der aus der provinziellen Enge auszog in die weite Welt und nach wechselvollen, ja abenteuerlichen und harten Jahren ein erfolgreicher Geschäftsmann wurde, Sprachen, Philologie und Philosophie studierte, in Sachen Archäologie ein Autodidakt und Laie, versetzte mit seinen 1870 begonnenen Grabungen in Troja (Hissarlik) die Fachwelt in Erstaunen. Seine sensationellen Funde und Ausgrabungen, darunter der vermeintliche Schatz des Priamos oder die vermutliche Maske des Agamemnon sowie die Freilegung bedeutsamer Monumente in Ithaka (1870-1885), Orchomenos (seit 1880/81) oder in Tiryns (1884/85), lösten Debatten über bisherige Vorstellungen und Deutungender vorhomerischen und homerischen Zeit aus, die bis heute anhalten.
